SUNDERLAND HAVE SECURED the signature of one of the country’s most promising footballers.

Goalkeeper James Talbot, who was recently named FAI Schoolboy Player of the Year, spent last week training on Wearside and has agreed to join the Premier League outfit from Home Farm.

Capped for Ireland at U16 level, the Dubliner will begin a two-year scholarship with the Black Cats in July.

“As soon as I got here I knew I wanted to sign,” Talbot told safc.com. “I felt at home and everything was great. The coaches, the other staff, the pitches – it is brilliant.”

I can’t wait to start at Sunderland now. There’s some nerves as well, but every time I’ve been here I’ve loved it.”

There is a strong Irish presence at Sunderland with current senior internationals Keiren Westwood, James McClean and O’Shea all plying their trade at the Stadium of Light with the veteran defender having a word with his new club-mate.

“It is great to be at the same club as them,” he added. “I talked to John and he congratulated me on the award.

“(Signing here) feels great. It’s not hit me yet. I had a few trials and when I was asked to sign I was over the moon.”
