Olympic Breakfast: Gold beckons for Taylor

The nation will be behind Ireland’s poster girl as she takes on Sofya Ochigava of Russia in the women’s lightweight final today.

EVERY MORNING, WE bring you all of the info you need to make sure you don’t miss a second of Olympic gold.

IT’S THE MOMENT Katie Taylor has been waiting most of her life for.

During an interview with a 15-year-old Taylor and her father Peter from 2002, both mentioned their hopes for her to one day compete in the Olympics.

Ten years on, the most talented women’s boxer in the world is on the brink of realising that dream by claiming the first ever gold up for grabs in the event.

Top of the bill

Athletics

Out on the Olympic Stadium track tonight, there is  the men’s 200m final, the men’s decathlon 1,500m final as well as medal events in men’s triple jump and women’s javelin throw.

Women’s Football

After the enthralling semi-final encounter between the Team USA and Canada, Hope Solo and her team-mates take on Japan at Wembley Stadium with the winner taking gold. Kick off is 7.45pm.

Canoe Sprint

There may not be any Irish competitors to cheer on but we’ve been taken in by the canoe sprint during these Games and the men’s and women’s finals, from 09.30am, will be well worth tuning into.

Who’s flying the flag?

Boxing

Whatever’s going on in your life today, make sure to free it up around 4.45pm. Taylor’s final against Sofya Ochigava of Russia could well be the moment of London 2012 and one of Irish sport’s most historic events.

The ExCel Arena was packed to the rafters with fans waving tricolours yesterday and the atmosphere is likely to be something similar this afternoon.

BMX

Not necessarily the first event that comes to mind when you think of the Olympics but why not broaden your horizons. The men’s quarter-finals are on from 3pm.
