As many expected, Billy Walsh’s talented team of boxers have proved our most successful athletes in London and young Michael Conlan can join John Joe Nevin and Katie Taylor as an Olympic medal winner by booking a place in the men’s flyweight semi-finals tonight.
Top of the bill
Boxing
19-year-old Michael Conlan showed style and confidence in abundance when he stepped into an Olympic ring for the very first time on Friday. The Belfast native saw off the threat of Ghana’s Duke Micah by a score of 19-8 and takes on Nordine Oubaali of France in his quarter-final at the ExCel Arena. He is due out at 9pm.
Football
With Stuart Pearce’s Team GB eliminated, the last four teams battle it out for a place in the men’s football final tonight. Brazil’s star-studded squad, who are strong favourites, take on South Korea at Old Trafford (kick-off 7.45pm) but Mexico and Japan are first up at 5pm.
Athletics
There’s the men’s 1500m final and the women’s 100m hurdles final during the night session.

Who’s flying the flag?

Paul Hession takes to the track for the first time at these Games and is alongside 100m silver medallist Yohan Blake in Heat 4 of the 200m at 11.50am.
27-year-old Fionnuala Britton was disappointed with how her 10,000m final ended on Saturday and will be looking to restores some personal pride with a better showing in the women’s 5,000m. She’s up in Heat One at 10.55am.
The men’s triathlon begins in Hyde Park this morning (11.30am) and Fermanagh’s Gavin Noble will fly the flag for Ireland.
Derval O’Rourke qualified for the women’s 100m hurdles semi-finals as the fastest loser yesterday and is back out at 7.15pm this evening.
Sailing
Two of our sailors, Ger Owens and Scott Flanigan, are in Weymouth today. The pair, 27th overall in the 470 class, compete in Race 9 (midday) and Race 10 (1.15pm).

As already mentioned, flyweight fighter Michael Conlan takes on his French opponent at 9pm.
