OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER says Jesse Lingard still has a Manchester United future and hopes the attacking midfielder will return from his loan move to West Ham โrevitalisedโ.
Having been part of the England side that reached the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, things have gone awry for a variety of reasons over the past 18 months or so and the 28-year-old has often found himself on the outside looking in.
Lingard has made just three appearances in all competitions for United this term, but the attacking midfielder will get the chance to kick on for the remainder of the season at West Ham.
Lingard had his medical on Friday afternoon ahead of joining the Hammers on loan and Solskjaer says he is still valued at Old Trafford.
โWe want Jesse to come back here revitalised and having shown at West Ham how good a player he is, of course,โ the United boss said of Lingard, whose contract was recently extended until 2022.
โHeโs just been unfortunate with a couple of issues โ some periods that he had to stay away from us with the Covid and isolation, with the close contact.
โThe rest of the team has done well. Weโve had little to no injuries and heโs not forced his way into the team, unfortunately.
โI just want him to go there and enjoy himself, show how good a player he is and come back. He a Man United player through and through.โ
The PA news agency understands West Ham are covering Lingardโs wages throughout his loan stint, as well as paying United a ยฃ1.5million loan fee.
The attacking midfielder is set to be followed out of Old Trafford by Marcos Rojo, who made just 17 appearances for the club after signing new and improved terms with the club in March 2018.
The defender is out of contract this summer and understood to be on the brink of joining Boca Juniors, but Solskjaer expects out-of-favour goalkeeper Sergio Romero to see out the remaining months of his contract at United.
โLikely that Jesseโs loan deal with West Ham is going through, likely that Marcos goes back to Argentina,โ the Norwegian said. โLittle bit of paperwork left to be done, I think.
โSergio, Iโve not heard anything there apart from that heโll be with us for the rest of his contract.โ
Timothy Fosu-Mensah left for Bayer Leverkusen this month and Odion Ighaloโs loan from Shanghai Shenhua ended, while Facundo Pellistri is in line for a loan switch as Solskjaer shapes his squad for the second half of the season.
Talented teenager Amad Diallo has arrived from Atalanta but will link up with United U23s on Saturday rather than the first-team, who travel to Arsenal looking to bounce back from the shock home loss to Sheffield United.
โOf course you analyse the games as you normally do,โ Solskjaer said.
โI think a lot has been made of it, of course, because it was top against bottom but thatโs the Premier League.
โI think people show a lack of respect for Sheffield United as well because theyโve been unlucky this season and this game they got what they have deserved so many times earlier.
โTheyโve got players who can hurt you, an organisation that has worked for them for years with Chris (Wilder) and we are disappointed, of course. A setback.
โBut when you donโt hit your level in the Premier League against any opponent youโre asking for a tough game and we got one. Unfortunately, we just couldnโt work it out during the 90 minutes.โ
Solskjaer is expecting a tough game against improving Arsenal, where Eric Bailly and Anthony Martial should be involved after knocks.
The United boss has checked on the mental wellbeing of Martial and Axel Tuanzebe after they were subjected to sickening racist abuse on social media after the midweek loss to the Blades.
โItโs disgusting and the players and everyoneโฆ weโve spoken to each other, of course, and theyโre fine, to put it that way,โ Solskjaer said.
โTheyโre not Man United fans in my head anyway when this happens. Weโre all standing behind every single one of our players.โ
Mad to think Denmark scored more in the Aviva than South Africa in the rugby
Though there were mistakes throughout by management, anyone who thinks the solution is to bring in a new messiah and to try and play attacking football is not looking deep enough. Of any of the fifty or so possible starters for an Irish team, the only one who could play that style is arter.
Dublin has a much lower population of GAA players than soccer, yet produces Diarmuid Connolly and Ciarain Kilkenny, both players who are wonderful passers of a football, with vision and attacking creativity. Soccer in Dublin produces no such players.
Irish soccer needs an overhaul similar to the one Belgium had in 2000, Spain had in 94, and Germany had in 2002. The style has to change from the age of six. Otherwise, itโs a long freewheel downhill from here
@Chucky Arlaw: the FAI have an awful lot to answer for. Useless
@Chucky Arlaw: are u saying the only player in the panel capable of playing good football is Arter?? Is that correct or have I misunderstood something?
So if McCleans shot goes in and the dynamics of the game change, and we hold on for an hour, we have no such problems in our game anymore? Give it a rest you bore itโs one game we got smashed cos of 2 sloppy goals in 3 minutes which was effectively the game ender. Put the fossil brush and magnifying glass away you pretentious aul eejit.
The North were brave when they appointed Micheal OโNeil and were rewarded. A league of Ireland manager who was progressive, on an upward curve in his career not winding his career down.
Why not take a punt on Stephen Kenny, heโs shown that he can coach players of a certain standard to perform well past expectation and win games against teams with vast superior resources.
The lack of preperation and lack of belief in the players ability means its time for a change at the helm. Would give anything to see Chris Hughton given a go
The north and south join up now stop this silly politics
@Aidan O: pour one bucket of muck into another bucket of muck, you just end up with a big bucket of muck.
@Aidan O: We already have players from the North; Duffy, McLean, OโKane etc
European championship failure!
Not to worry. We still have John Delaney.
More failure on other international stages.
