Off the record: 5 sporting stories you may have missed this weekend

A Song for Statto and Derrick Rose on a pizza box? We’re too good to you.

UNLESS YOU’VE BEEN glued to the internet all weekend, there’s a chance that some weird and wonderful sporting tidbits might have slipped through the cracks. Here’s a run-down of some of the stories you may have missed.

1. #NEVER GO BACK What is the world coming to when you can’t even walk down the street to see your current club play your former club without being subjected to all kinds of verbal abuse from the members of the general public. Not even Marouane Chamakh (playing the Kevin Costner role here) could save Samir Nasri from the Gooners’ faithful yesterday.

2. #PIZZA THE ACTION Picture this. You’re sitting at home, minding your own business, watching the NFL playoffs and waiting for your pizza to arrive when BAM — the delivery guy shows up with a pizza box that has your face on it.

Ok this probably isn’t exactly how Derrick Rose’s night played out but if it happened to us, we’d be tweeting #blessed too.

3. #STATTO We haven’t seen Angus “Statto” Loughran for ages so it was a pleasant surprise when the Sky cameras cut to him in the crowd chatting to Alex Ferguson during Manchester United’s win against Liverpool yesterday.

More importantly it reminded us of Baddiel and Skinner’s dearly-departed Fantasy Football League programme.

4. #WOOF There’s something uniquely charming about the GAA in January as players blow off the cobwebs with a few pre-season run-outs. There’s dogs for one thing — Ted was cheering on Kildare in the O’Byrne Cup against Wexford yesterday.

5. HOWZAT? This is worthy of a high-five or two. Reports in Australia are naming this young spectator as Peter Spurling, a young Aussie Rules prospect, who made headlines with a brilliant one-handed crowd catch. And he was holding an iced coffee and two burgers while he did it, no biggie.
