O'Connell 'progressing satisfactorily' but ruled out until the New Year

Munster have announced that the influential lock won’t play again in 2012 due to a back injury.

PAUL O’CONNELL WILL be out of action until the New Year, Munster revealed today.

The 33-year-old lock has only featured twice for Rob Penney’s side this season, with his last involvement coming aginst Edinburgh back in October, and it was suggested that he may need surgery on a problematic back injury.

However, in a statement released on their website this afternoon, the province has announced that they are satisfied with how the influential player is taking to treatment.

Paul O’Connell is undergoing treatment for a lower back complaint. His treatment is progressing satisfactorily. He will see a specialist for further review in the New Year.”

Munster will be hopeful to have O’Connell back in time for their Heineken Cup pool round five and six in January while Ireland begin their Six Nations campaign against Wales on February 2.
