Olympic medallists Barnes and Conlan named in NI team for Commonwealth Games

Northern Ireland’s 117-person team is its biggest yet for the Commonwealth Games.

BOXER PADDY BARNES will be hoping to make his a double when he defends his light-flyweight title at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next month.

Barnes and his fellow Olympic medallist Michael Conlan were named yesterday on Northern Ireland’s 117-person team for the 20th Games, which gets underway on 23 July.

Also included are London Olympians Martyn Irvine (cycling), Lisa Kearney (judo), Sycerika McMahon (swimming) and Aileen Reid (triathlon).

Four-time Paralympic champion Jason Smyth will compete in the 100m, 200m, and 4 x 100m track events while another of Ireland’s Paralympic gold medallists, swimmer Bethany Firth, will also compete.
