WILLIAM AND VICTOR Clarke, brothers and solicitors from Carlow have conquered what has been called “the coldest marathon on earth”.
The brothers took part in the UVU North Pole Marathon in aid of St. Patrick’s Mental Health Foundation’s ‘Walk in my Shoes’ campaign which looks to help young adults with mental health difficulties.
Part of the Clarkes’ training for the marathon involved them spending time in a refrigerator to help them acclimatise to the sub-zero conditions. What the fridge sessions couldn’t have prepared them for were the snow, threats of frost bite and sightings of polar bears. The UVU North Pole Marathon is the only marathon run entirely on water, ie the frozen Arctic Ocean.

There were respectable finishes from both, with William completing the full marathon in 15th position, while Victor placed 6th in the half marathon.
