'I cannot wait to pull on the red shirt' - Liverpool complete signing of Ireland international Fahey

Galway-born defensive midfielder Niamh Fahey joins the Reds following one season in Ligue 1 with Bordeaux.

LIVERPOOL LADIES HAVE snapped up Ireland international Niamh Fahey, completing a transfer for the 30-year-old which brings an end to her time at Bordeaux.

Fahey returns to English football having won five league titles and five Women’s FA Cups during spells at Arsenal and Chelsea, explaining that she was thrilled to be joining the Merseysiders.

“I am absolutely delighted to be returning to the WSL and playing for a club as big as Liverpool Ladies,” she said on Saturday.

“I am a huge Liverpool FC fan so I cannot wait to pull on the red shirt for the first time.

“I really enjoyed my time in France with Bordeaux but felt as though the time had come to return to the WSL and experience a new challenge.

“Having spoken to Neil [Redfearn] and listened to the club’s ambitions, I am really confident that we will have a successful season.”

The Galway-born defensive midfielder spent eight years at Salthill Davon before embarking on an successful time in top-flight English football, simultaneously making over 50 appearances for Ireland.

Liverpool Ladies manager Neil Redfearn said Fahey’s experience would be crucial to the club’s aims of competing for top honours next season.

“This is a really important signing for the club as Niamh is a top-class footballer,” he said.

“She has won a number of trophies during her spells with Arsenal Women and Chelsea Women so her experience will be vital for us this season.

“A number of other clubs tried to sign Niamh so we are delighted that she has decided that Liverpool Ladies would be the right club and I am really looking forward to working alongside her.”

Fahey helped Arsenal to a domestic treble in 2009 before playing a key role as Chelsea won a domestic double in 2015, spending one year in Ligue 1 where she helped Bordeaux to a seventh place finish last season.
