Several arrests made after police raid Newcastle and West Ham over transfer dealings

Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs officers swooped on St James’ Park and London Stadium this morning.

SEVERAL ARRESTS HAVE been made for suspected tax and insurance fraud after Newcastle United and West Ham United were raided over their transfer dealings.

Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) officers swooped on Newcastle’s St James’ Park and West Ham’s London Stadium as part of an operation across England and France this morning.

One of the men believed to have been arrested is Newcastle managing director Lee Chanley,  which comes only two days after the Magpies secured their return to the Premier League.

“HMRC has arrested several men working within the professional football industry for a suspected income tax and national insurance fraud,” a statement read.

“180 HMRC officers have been deployed across the UK and France today. Investigators have searched a number of premises in the north-east and south-east of England and arrested the men, and also seized business records, computers and mobile phones.

“The French authorities are assisting the UK investigation, have made arrests and several locations have been searched in France.

“This criminal investigation sends a clear message that, whoever you are, if you commit tax fraud you can expect to face the consequences.”
