JOHN JOE NEVIN and Jason Quigley both claimed gold medals for Ireland at the European boxing championships today.
Quigley beat Romania’s Bogdan Juratoni in a split decision in their middleweight decider despite running out of steam in the final round.
However, the judges believed the Donegal man had done enough work earlier in the fight to secure the win

Earlier John Joe Nevin secured Ireland’s first gold of the week with a unanimous win over Mykola Butsenko in Minsk.
The 24-year old from Westmeath looked in complete control from the start and beat his Ukrainian opponent 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 on the scorecard after easing up in the third round.
The win gives Nevin his first European title and will propel him to the top of the AIBA Bantamweight world rankings when they are released next month.
Speaking after the fight, Nevin told the Irish Sports Council: “I’ve the whole collection of gold, silver and bronze medals now and I’m happy now.
“It’s my first gold medal at a major championships and I’m delighted.”
Taoiseach Enda Kenny congratulated both men after their bouts.
“Irish boxers Irish boxers continue to deliver outstanding performances which are just rewards for all their efforts over many long months and years of training and preparation.
“I also want to thank Coach Billy Walsh and the coaching staff for their commitment to the team and for their ongoing commitment and efforts with these great young boxers.”
The two wins followed a disappointing start to the day for the Irish at the championships after Paddy Barnes was earlier forced to withdraw with a broken nose sustained during his first fight this week.
Elsewhere, Michael Conlan lost for the third time in three fights to Wales’ Andrew Selby meaning the Belfast flyweight will have to settle for a silver medal.
