Myres clinches Ireland's first medal

Hugh Myres will be coming home with a bronze medal at minimum after booking his place in the light-flyweight semis at the European U23 Boxing Championships.

HUGH MYRES BAGGED Ireland’s first medal of the European U23 Championships on Friday morning with the prospect of more to come later this afternoon.

Myres won all three rounds against French southpaw Ory Georges, guaranteeing himself bronze at minimum with a 17-10 win on the judges’ cards.

The Ryston clubman returns to the ring on Monday when he will face Israel’s David Albridian in the light-flyweight semi-finals.

Thurles Moran can add another medal later this evening when he faces Pavel Kostromin of Belarus in the last eight of the welterweight division. The Dubliner is due in the ring at approximately 5pm Irish time.

But there was disappointment in Kaliningrad for Christy Joyce whose heavyweight challenge was stopped in the second round of his quarter-final against Ukraine’s Gevory Manukyn.

After sharing the opening round 2-2, the St Michael’s Athy boxer was caught by one of Manukyn’s body shots and the referee waved off the bout.

Three more Irish quarter-finalists will box for medals tomorrow with Declan Geraghty, Mark O’Hara and Jason Quigley all in action.
