MUNSTER SURVIVED AN early scare to easily overcome Edinburgh in their RaboDirect Pro12 clash in Meggetland this evening.

Carl Bezuidenhout touched down after just nine minutes to give the home side the lead. However, Greig Laidlaw couldn’t add the extras and six minutes later Munster were back within two when JJ Hanrahan slotted over the game’s first penalty

The visitors took the lead just a minute later when Andrew Conway crossed the whitewash after some fine work from CJ Stander, Hanrahan delivering the extras to give them a 10-5 lead.

Edinburgh fought back though and retook the lead when WP Nel scored their second try of the game – the South African finishing off after it looked like Jack Cuthbert would score – and this time Laidlaw did the necessary with the conversion to make it 12-10.

That was as good as it got for the home side, however, as a penalty from Hanrahan gave Munster the narrowest of leads before Denis Hurley skipped between two weak attempts at tackles to give the visitors a 20-12 half-time lead.

Rob Penney’s men completely dominated a poor second half, taking advantage of numerous mistakes from the home side.

First, replacement hooker Damien Varley finished off a driving maul before Munster were awarded the first of two penalty tries when a re-set five metre scrum rumbled forward; Hanrahan nailing the conversion on both scores.

Duncan Williams was the next name on the scoresheet – after the game had briefly been delayed because of a van going on fire – before Grant Gilchrist was shown a yellow card for knocking on in the corner when Munster looked certain to score, and the visitors were awarded their second penalty try.

Tommy O’Donnell then rounded off the scoring for the visitors in the final play of the game to keep them within a point of a home semi-final with one round remaining.
