Munster confirm O'Connell to have surgery 'at the earliest opportunity'

The 33-year-old lock will go under the knife in a bid to correct a problematic back injury, the province announced tonight.

MUNSTER HAVE TONIGHT announced that Paul O’Connell will undergo surgery on a problematic back.

The 33-year-old lock, who hasn’t played since October, was expected to be out until the new year after the province revealed that treatment on the injury was “progressing satisfactorily” earlier this month.

However, in a brief statement this evening, it has been confirmed that O’Connell will go under the knife.

Following consultation between IRFU and Munster medical staff and the player himself, it has been decided that Paul O’Connell will undergo back surgery at the earliest opportunity,” the statement read.
