Movember power rankings: the top 10 sporting mos, week 3

Who’s up and who’s down? The race to be crowned sport’s Movember champion is heating up as we enter the final week.

THIS IS WHERE things get serious.

Regular readers will know the drill at this stage. Every week we comb (pun very much intended) through all those sport stars taking part in Movember, pick out our favourites, and rank them from 10 to 1.

Mathieu Bastareaud was the early front-runner but following a stewards’ enquiry from readers, the French rugby star dropped a couple of places and now he’s out of the running entirely.

Newstalk’s Diarmuid ‘Gizzy’ Lyng then took up the charge at the half-way point but he has work to do as well.

So who is the man to catch as Movember 2013 enters the home stretch? Here’s the latest — and may the best mo’ win.

Movember power rankings: the top 10 sporting mos, week 3
1 / 10
  • 10. Ger Gilroy & Diarmuid 'Gizzy' Lyng

Gizzy surprised us as a Movember bolter last week but from a distance, it looks slightly less impressive. Big push needed over the final week.
  • 9. Tom Cunniffe

A new entry at number nine as Mayo footballer Tom Cunniffe makes the cut for the first time. Again, it's not the best pic, but his ambition can't go unnoticed.
  • 8. Joe McMahon

A traditional handlebar effort from Big Joe -- he's got a good shape going on...
  • 7. Mitchell Johnson

... and Aussie cricketer Mitchell Johnson is obviously a big fan of the Tyrone footballer's look!
  • 6. Glenn Whelan

It's a brave man who would show up to a Roy Keane training session looking like this, so all credit to Glenn Whelan at the end of the day.
  • 5. Darragh Fanning

Leinster's Fanning looks a little bit surprised to be included but trust us, he's earned it.
  • 4. Jacques Burger

Now this is a mo' with intent. Burger's look is reminiscent of Jim McGuinness circa 1992.
  • 3. Tim Murtagh

Murtagh still remains the pick of the Cricket Ireland Mo Bros. Bonus points for the porn star robe too.
  • 2. Shane Lowry

Lowry's mo might not be as visually striking as some of the others but this is way above our expectations. Remarkable progress in two weeks.
  • 1. Steffon Armitage

Armitage scores high on fullness, style and creativity -- with extra credit for the speed lines. The crown is his to lose as we enter the final week.
