#PREMIER LEAGUE Shane Long made a successful return to Premier League action last night. Despite having initially been ruled out of the upcoming Ireland squad, the striker made a premature comeback as West Brom overcame Southampton 2-0.

#RUGBY The Ireland squad trained yesterday ahead of the upcoming November tests and there were no new injuries to report on, with Paul O’Connell among those who took full part, despite there having initially been some doubts over his fitness. The squad has already been forced to cope with the absence of several high-profile players, including Ulster’s Stephen Ferris.

#CYCLING The fallout from the Lance Armstrong scandal continues, with Alexandre Vinokourov being the latest individual to have been accused of corruption. The UCI are consequently set to investigate claims that Vinokourov paid off a rival to win his second Liege-Bastogne-Liege classic in 2010.
