Monthly player awards for Joe Canning and Karl Lacey

After respective defeats of the Rebels in their semi-final showdowns, the August awards go to Canning and Lacey.

AFTER HIS COMMENTS about Kilkenny and Henry Shefflin in Thurles yesterday, Galway star Joe Canning was again out and about today.

The Portumna clubman was in Croke Park to pick up another prize for the mantelpiece – the GAA/GPA Opel Player of the Month Award for August.

Canning was joined at GAA HQ by Donegal’s Karl Lacey who is preparing for the Ulster champions’ All-Ireland SFC final against Mayo on Sunday week, of course.

“Both Joe and Karl served up performances to savour with Galway and Donegal respectively, playing crucial roles in those counties’ performances against Cork (hurling) and (football),” said Association chief, Liam O’Neill.

GPA chief executive Dessie Farrell added: “Congratulations to Joe and Karl for their outstanding achievements in being acknowledged by their fellow players for their displays last month. While as always both will point to their team-mates, it is nonetheless important to recognise when the individual player excels in pursuit of the collective cause.”
