COLIN MONTGOMERIE SAYS he would avoid a Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods match-up in the Ryder Cup singles on Sunday.
Montgomerie, who captained the European team to victory in Wales two years ago, sees Woods as a serious threat to Europe’s quest to defend the trophy at the Medinah Country Club in Illinois this week.

Woods and McIlroy have dominated on the PGA Tour this year, resulting in plenty of public clamour for the world’s highest ranked players to go head to head in a singles match.
But Montgomerie has urged current European captain Jose Maria Olazabal to use his strongest weapon carefully and instead pair world number one McIlroy with a lower-ranked opponent.
“I would leave Woods well alone,” the Scot said.
Don’t go anywhere near him, especially in America and playing now to a certain degree an awful lot better than he has been.
“I would want Rory to be playing someone else in the singles if you don’t mind.
“Yes, everybody wants this to happen, but look what happened to Stephen Ames when he played Woods.”
