That ensured they finished behind Derry in Section B but still on scoring difference edged out Donegal and Antrim โ who finished second in the other sections โ for the best runner-up place.
They will face Section C winners Cavan who were not in action tonight as they had been given a walkover by third-level side UUJ. Monaghan lead 1-10 to 0-7 at the break with Shane Carey striking their goal and substitute Christopher McGuinness raised the second green flag.
The one game on in Section C tonight saw Antrim take the spoils by 1-12 to 0-10 against Down in Pรกirc Esler in Newry. Antrim lead 1-9 to 0-6 at the break. Paddy Cunningham struck their goal during that period which helped to lay the foundations for a five-point success.
