It was a great weekend for MK Dons' Irish duo in the Championship

Meanwhile, Paul McShane and Stephen Quinn endured disappointing competitive debuts with Reading.

IT WAS A satisfactory opening weekend in the Championship for Irish players Samir Carruthers and Darren Potter, as newly promoted MK Dons got their Championship campaign off to a winning start.

A 4-1 victory over Rotherham, for whom Paul Green and Aidy White featured, saw Karl Robinson’s side claim top spot in the Championship on the opening day.

Elsewhere, Joe Mason and Anthony Pilkington started, while Eoin Doyle was on the bench, as Cardiff drew 1-1 with Fulham.

Paul McShane and Stephen Quinn both started, while Simon Cox came off the bench, but they couldn’t prevent Reading losing 2-1 against Birmingham, who had Stephen Gleeson in their team.

Shane Duffy was in the Blackburn side that lost 2-1 to Wolves, with Matt Doherty making a last-minute substitute appearance for the latter.

Richard Keogh started while Jeff Hendrick and Alex Pearce were both on the bench (Hendrick came on after 21 minutes) as Derby drew 0-0 at Bolton.

There was plenty of Irish representation as Brentford drew 2-2 with Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich. Alan Judge and Alan McCormack both started for the hosts, while Daryl Murphy played the full 90 minutes, with Jonathan Douglas and David McGoldrick making substitute appearances for the visitors.

David Meyler came off the bench in Hull’s 2-0 defeat of Huddersfield, for whom Joe Murphy was an unused sub.

Keiren Westwood earned a clean sheet, as Sheffield Wednesday beat Bristol City 2-0, with Derrick Williams playing the full 90 minutes for the latter.

Finally, in today’s game, Greg Cunningham started and Alan Browne was on the bench, as Preston drew 0-0 with Middlesbrough.
