MICHAEL SAM, THE first openly gay professional American football player, delivered a moving speech after accepting the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the annual ESPY ceremony in the States last night.

The 24-year-old moved some of those present to tears as talked about what he has learned on his life journey, which has led him onto the roster of the NFL’s St. Louis Rams.

“To anyone out there, especially young people feeling like they don’t fit in, and will never be accepted, please know this: great things can happen when you have the courage to be yourself,” said Sam.

Was this the bravest individual effort of this year’s Tour de France?

@Kris Hetherington: forget about race and religion, but the board of the FAI needs a balance of male and female reps. As brutally organised and administered As the men’s game is the women’s is worse and participation levels of young girls has massive scope for improvement. The board needs a strong female voice that champions girls soccer.

Let’s not be getting ahead of ourselves here, first things first is to get the board of the FAI into the early 19th centurary and then in due course up to date
