Derry City set to lose another academy graduate as Celtic make move for young midfielder

Michael Duffy is to go on trial with the SPL champions next week.

MICAHEL DUFFY COULD be the latest in a long line of Derry City players to secure a move across the water with reports suggesting he will go on trial with Celtic next week.

The Northern Ireland U21 international has risen through the ranks at the Brandywell and The Derry Sentinel are reporting that the Scottish Premier League champions have invited the player over to their Lennoxtown training complex.

Duffy, who scored 15 goals in all competitions last season, only recently signed a new two-year contract with the Candystripes so any transfer would require a fee to be arranged between the clubs.

The 20-year-old is a product of the Derry youth system and should he impress Ronny Delia and complete sign a contract with the Bhoys, he would follow in the footsteps of Paddy McCourt and Niall McGinn in moving to Celtic Park from the Brandywell.

The loss of Duffy would represent a significant setback for the FAI Cup runners-up as manager Peter Hutton looks to build on last season and construct a squad capable of competing for the Airtricity League title.

In essence, they’ve been victims of their own success. The Candystripes face a perennial battle to keep hold of their fledgling stars with David McDaid, Stephen McLaughlin and James McClean just three players to move across the water in recent seasons.

They could also lose Stephen Dooley with the 23-year-old midfielder currently on trial at League One side Wycombe Wanderers, according to The Derry Sentinel.

Former UCD striker Cillian Morrison has been added to the squad for the 2015, however.
