IRELAND’S MICHAEL CONLAN took his professional record to a perfect three from three in Brisbane overnight with this quick stoppage of Jarrett Owen.

Conlan landed some big body shots on his Australian opponent midway through the third round, with referee Tony Kettlewell eventually stepping in to wave off the fight.

There was a brief moment of confusion at the conclusion as Conlan stopped fighting and looked in Kettlewell’s direction before throwing a final flurry.

It looked as though Conlan was encouraging the referee to intervene but in fact, as Ciarán Gallagher reports from Suncorp Stadium, he misheard Kettlewell and thought he had already called on him to stop.

Owen stayed on his feet but, failing to defend himself, referee Tony Kettlewell called a halt at 1min 56secs of the round – the official appearing for a moment to be slightly hesitant to step in as he attempted to assess the visibly-hurt Owen.
Conlan did not appear to be visibly ecstatic with the finish, approaching ESPN commentators at ringside to explain that he thought the referee had called ‘stop’ a few seconds before the eventual stoppage, but the Irishman was happy to record his third win in front of a strong and vocal Irish contingent in the attendance.
