Craig Gardner levelled matters for the Black Cats just after the break but Aaron Ramsey restored the one-goal advantage on 69 minutes. The Welsh midfielder made it 3-1 after finishing off a fine team move.

Arsenal’s North London rivals, Spurs were also grateful for a debut assist as they took a first-half lead against Norwich at White Hart Lane. Christian Eirksen, signed from Ajax, set up Gyfli Sigurdsson to slam home the opener. The Icelandic international doubled the Spurs lead after the break.
