Men's hockey: Russia no match for Ireland

Paul Revington’s side got their Olympic qualifiers off to a superb start with a 6-1 win in UCD this afternoon.

IRELAND SHOOK OFF early nerves to eventually win out convincingly over Russia and get their Olympic bid off to a great start in UCD earlier today.

Paul Revington’s side are competing against five other teams for the chance to qualify for this summer’s games in Olympics, opened the scoring after 15 minutes through the returning John  Jermyn, who has been laid off with injury in recent months.

Just second later, Jermyn was again involved before Timmy Cockram struck home into an empty net. They looked in control were were next to concede when a rebound fell to Ravshan Zakirov, who made no mistake in front of goal.

Ireland made it three in the second half when forward Mitch Darling put the ball over the line after Russia had made a few attempts to clear. Further goals from Peter Caruth, Conor Harte and Michael Watt were more than enough to see off their opponents in what was a good work out ahead their game with Ukraine on Sunday (2.30pm).
