VIDEO: Midfielder becomes stand-in goalkeeper, saves penalty

Galatasaray’s narrow win over Elazigspor was aided by unusual circumstances.

THERE ARE FEW things more amusing in modern football than outfield players having to serve as goalkeepers, usually after a team’s regular net-minder has been sent off.

Remember John O’Shea a few years back?

This circumstance arose again during a recent Galatasaray match, when Felipe Melo was forced to go in goals, after their regular shot-stopper was sent off.

Yet to the surprise of many, Melo subsequently excelled in his new role, saving a decisive penalty during the game.

And fortunately for the Brazilian, the referee also failed to spot the fact that he was several yards off his line for the incident in question, thus helping Galatasaray to secure a 1-0 victory over Elazigspor, and meaning that they’re now just one point behind Turkish Super Lig leaders Antalyaspor.
