Rory McIlroy digs deep again to clinch narrow win against Zach Johnson

The world number three is still on track to defend his WGC Dell Matchplay title.

RORY McILROY IS just three matchplay wins from defending his WGC Dell Matchplay title after seeing off Zach Johnson with a 1up victory in their last-16 clash.

The world number three scraped through a sudden-death playoff clash against Kevin Na yesterday and prevailed in another tight battle against the reigning British Open champion.

This tee shot on the 11th was the highlight of the 26-year-old’s round in Austin, Texas.

Johnson put pressure on McIlroy, who had a one-hole lead, on the 18th when he holed an impressive birdie putt. But the reigning champion held his nerve to match Johnson’s birdie and secure a 1up win.

The Northern Irishman will face American Chris Kirk in the quarter-finals.
