RORY MCILROY ADMITS it is going to take something special to end the recent dominance of the majors by American golfers as the British Open teed off at Carnoustie in Scotland on Thursday.
Now 29, McIlroy is aiming to end a four-year drought without a major victory but the trend is towards the strong contingent from the United States maintaining a firm grip on the sportโs biggest prizes.
The last five majors โ and seven of the last nine โ have been won by Americans, including Jordan Spiethโs victory at Royal Birkdale 12 months ago and Brooks Koepkaโs successful recent defence of the US Open.
โThereโs so many great players, and it just seems like, at this point in time, theyโre all playing really good golf at the same time,โ said McIlroy, the 2014 Open champion, on Wednesday.
โTheyโre some of the best players in the world and deservedly so, and theyโre going to take some beating,โ added McIlroy, who made his major debut as an amateur here 11 years ago.
- Woods back in contention -
American strength in depth is all the more striking with the Ryder Cup coming up in France at the end of September, and with Tiger Woods in Scotland looking like a genuine contender to finally triumph at a major again, a decade after he won his 14th at the US Open.
Woods, 42, is a three-time winner of the Claret Jug and he believes that the unique conditions of links golf could offer him his best chance to add to his haul.
โAs far as long term, certainly, I would say yes because of the fact that you donโt have to be long to play on a links style golf course,โ said Woods, who is not getting any younger but takes inspiration from the veteran Tom Watsonโs near miss at Turnberry in 2009.
โLook what Tom did at Turnberry at 59, I believe he was. So itโs possible. Distance becomes a moot point on a links style golf course. But creativity plays such an important role.โ
Woods, who finished tied 32nd at this yearโs Masters and missed the cut at the US Open, will be one of the last players to tee off in the first round, going out at 3:21pm (1421 GMT) in a group with Japanโs Hideki Matsuyama and Scotlandโs Russell Knox.
McIlroy, meanwhile, starts his round at 12:53pm. World number one Dustin Johnson, another of the US contenders, goes out in the group behind McIlroy.
โIโve had four weeks off, so Iโve had a lot of rest. I feel good about the game,โ he said as he targets the $1.89 million first prize.
- Heatwave -
After surviving a final-day wobble to beat compatriot Matt Kuchar by three strokes last year, Spieth begins his defence of the Claret Jug at 9:58am, going out with Englandโs Justin Rose and Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand.
Spieth is looking to emulate Padraig Harrington, the last man to win The Open in back-to-back years โ the Irishman retained the trophy in 2008 having beaten Sergio Garcia in a play-off in 2007, the last Open at Carnoustie.
The notorious course is one of the very toughest to host The Open, all the more so when the wind blows in off the North Sea.
In 1999, the year Frenchman Jean Van de Velde famously blew his hopes of victory as he tried to play out of the Barry Burn in front of the 18th green, the weather added an extra layer of difficulty. Paul Lawrie won the Claret Jug despite finishing six over par.
Conditions may be rather more benign this week, as Scotlandโs east coast has enjoyed a prolonged summer heatwave that has turned the fairways brown.
โThe way the golf course is set at the moment, as the conditions are, anybody who plays in this tournament could win,โ remarked Gary Player, the South African, now aged 82, who won here in 1968.
Veteran Scotsman Sandy Lyle, Open champion in 1985, had the honour of playing the first tee shot at 6:35am.

Agree 100%, McGrath and Hendrick may be a bit too attack minded but there isnโt a box to box alternative unfortunately. Hopefully Omobamidele is fit for continuity, it could be argued that Collins is a better overall defender so should he able cover if not.
@TheCraftyCulchie: I think Omobamidele is a bit of a goal threat too. Big bonus.
@Vonvonic: I thinks heโs injured
@Rรญain HenC: Bad news
6 goals in 54 senior appearances for Adam Idah. 11 for Ireland with no goals. While I like his enthusiasm and energy I donโt think heโs the future. We desperately need to find a goalscorer.
@Shameless McFly: Club appearances isnโt a great metric to use when he only gets on the pitch for a few minutes and it counts as as appearance
According to Transfermarkt heโs got 8 premier league appearances this season for a total of 49 minutes
@Shameless McFly: Georgie Kelly
@Shameless McFly: Give him a chance. He holds the ball up really well, which is important with the wing back system. Hopefully heโll get a manager who fancies him at Norwich. Lampard could be good for him.
@Shameless McFly: 100% agreed.. Has shown very little threat at this level a s needs way more club game time and possibly a loan move
@Vonvonic: he doesnโt hold it up really well.. Thats the thing here.. Not sure what heโs currently bringing to the table
@Shameless McFly: Johnny Kenny coming through-serious prospect, give him another year.
McClean arguably our most in form player. Has to start over Doherty
@Stanley:
Yep. Thatโs the team Iโd pick.
Stephens did amazing in the wing back position last time. Heโs good in defence and crossing the ball. Far better option on the left than Doherty I think.
Outside of the 11, thereโs a strong argument for Coventry and Kilkenny to be there instead of Browne and Molumby based on minutes and form. Browne has experience which gives him an edge but the argument is there to be had.
@Christopher OโBrien: Browne has a lot more minutes on the pitch than Coventry. Coventry needs more time to settle. Kilkenny is a definite option but gaining more experience is also necessary. The changes cant be constant, the team needs stability.
I agree with the team but from what Kenny is saying it looks like he will rotate Doherty and Coleman for the 2 games over fitness concerns. Wouldnโt be surprised if he did the same on the other side with Mclean and Stevens
Even if I donโt agree he donโt want to change the team anyhow.
How Jeff hendrick is still robbing a wage as a footballer is beyond me
@dave Carwood: if he plays like he did last game, heโll be robbing Portugal of a win
@john Kelly! Seriously??? You must be joking!!!
I donโt think that Idah has done enough in green to justify a starting spot. Otherwise Iโd go with that team
@Gerry McCaughey: his physical presence was unsettling for Portugal the last day.
@Frainc ร Broin: Absolutely. Hรฉ had a great battle with Diaz all game. Unsettled him until the very end.
