Rory McIlroy backs Paul McGinley for Ryder Cup captaincy

Meanwhile, reports suggest Darren Clarke is set to pull out of the running for the position.

RORY MCILROY HAS backed fellow Irish golfer Paul McGinley to be Europe’s captain for the 2014 Ryder Cup.

Commenting on Twitter, McIlroy said:

“Ryder Cup captaincy should be a 1-time thing.

“Everybody deserving gets their chance and moves on. Would love to play under Paul McGinley in ’14.”

Reports suggest Darren Clarke is set to pull out of the running for the position, leaving McGinley and Colin Montgomerie, who was previously the captain in 2010, as the two main candidates.

Montgomerie has already received the backing of Henrik Stenson to return to the position, though McIlroy believes no one should be given a second opportunity in the role.
