Mayo champions Castlebar march on, Plunkett stars for Ballintubber

Reigning champions Castlebar and Ballintubber booked the first two places in this year’s Mayo SFC semi-finals.

CASTLEBAR MITCHELS CONTINUED the defence of their Mayo senior football title on Saturday evening with an 11-point win over Aghamore.

A Barry Moran goal was all that separated the sides at the end of the first half, Mitchels leading 1-5 to 0-5.

But the floodgates opened early in the second when Neil Douglas converted a penalty and Castlebar ran out 2-12 to 0-7 winners to book their return to the semi-finals.

They will be joined there by Ballintubber who overpowered Ballaghaderreen in the second half at Elverys McHale Park.

Alan Plunkett starred and it was his goal on 50 minutes that made the game safe as Ballintubber went on to win by eight, 1-14 to 0-9.

On Sunday it’s the turn of Breaffy and Knockmore (2pm) while Charlestown take on Garrymore in the last of the four quarter-finals (3.30pm).
