Martin Skrtel signs new Liverpool contract

The Slovakian centre-half is one of the Reds’ most consistent performers. Or he was before Saturday, anyway.

LIVERPOOL DEFENDER MARTIN SKRTEL has signed a new “long-term” contract with the Premier League club.

Skrtel had been linked with English champions Manchester City and Serie A outfit Fiorentina during the close season, but Liverpool have moved to keep the 27-year-old at Anfield.

Skrtel has become a vital member of the Reds’ side since arriving in a £6 million ($9.4 million) deal from Zenit St Petersburg in 2008 and was voted the club’s player of the year last season.

“I’m happy because I am a part of one of the biggest clubs in the world,” Skrtel told Liverpool’s website.

After last season there was a lot of talk about my future but I have to say that the first priority for me was always to sign a new deal with Liverpool.

“For me it’s a great thing to play for Liverpool. I am proud to play for Liverpool with these great players — probably some of the best players in the world.

“I hope I can create history at this club and that the fans will always remember me — that’s my target for the future.”
