- Paul Fennessy reports from Abbotstown
IRELAND BOSS MARTIN OโNeill has said Irelandโs injury issues ahead of the Denmark Nations League clash are of similar significance to those suffered by their opponents.
Totenhamโs Christian Eriksen, a key player for the Danes who hit a hat-trick the last time the sides met, is set to be absent for Saturday nightโs game at the Aviva with a stomach problem.
However, the Derry native pointed to Irelandโs own list of long-term absentees as an advantage for their opponents.
โ[Eriksen is] a world-class player, of course, itโs true. Iโm sure in the same way they would look at some of the players we have missing, a world-class player in our captain, our team, is missing, Seamus Coleman.
โAnd we havenโt had the services of Robbie Brady and James McCarthy for some time. Weโve some terrific footballers, including the man beside me [Jeff Hendrick], whose got some experience now, who did brilliantly in the Euros a couple of years ago. Iโm thinking of [him] taking on that mantle and kicking on, not only in his own [club] career and for us at international level.โ
OโNeill confirmed that Hendrick would start tomorrowโs game, and continued to suggest that he was considering switching to a 3-5-2 formation, after the 4-4-2 system failed to pay dividends during last monthโs 4-1 defeat in Wales.
Itโs the one players are able to adapt to. Weโve played a back four for quite some considerable time. We tried the back three so the players would be comfortable with it and I think they are. Some of the players, young [Matt] Doherty playing so well at the win- back role for Wolves, things like this here. I donโt think players are uncomfortable playing in either role.
โI think initially club form is very important, itโs important first of all for someone to be playing in their club team and playing regularly, and to be playing at a high level. All of those things are very important. We donโt have that luxury of players playing every week, even in the Championship, we have to make adjustments. It would be great if all our players were playing in the big league and playing regularly.
โSome of the players who did fine for us in Poland, less than a month ago, find themselves not starting in their teams at Championship level. They have to come back, re-adjust, and get prepared again. Those things take a bit of time. Itโs something we might not have a great deal of. Jeff mentioned we came in and had three or four days training which is great. But psychologically we might have players who havenโt started for their clubs, they are forced into this games here and they have to adjust and apply themselves.โ
In addition, reflecting on the painful 5-1 World Cup play-off defeat to the Danes in Dublin last November, OโNeill suggested Ireland could have won the game had things turned out differently.
โWe took the confidence from Copenhagen and took the lead and my own view is we had a chance to make it 2-0 and had James McCleanโs chance gone in, we would have gone to Russia. That said, Denmark fought back, great credit to them, which meant we had to chase the game in the second half and we got picked off in the match. We had a world-class performance from a world-class player [Eriksen] who was simply sublime on the night.โ

World class is a bit of a stretch Martin! Very good player but far from world class
@Brendan flynn: I couldnโt name 5 better right backs in world football so ye, he is world class.
@Brendan flynn: if he didnโt get his leg break he could have got a better club than everton. Has everything youโd want for a modern full back. Not many right backs better than him. Wouldnโt heโs far from world class
@Brendan flynn: He is world class, even pros say it about him but oh no a randomer on 42.ie would clearly know better.
@Mark McDermott: Jesus lad itโs Friday, will ya relax!
@Mark McDermott: world class enough to play for the mighty Everton.
Heโs Irelands best player, but thatโs not saying much
@Yorkie1892: ack am an evertonian & genuinely shocked by youโre statement!
@Conor Mc Nally: Kimmich,Alves,Walker,Juanfran, Piszcek
@Conor Mc Nally: If he was world class he would be at Chelsea/city/Utd/pool/Barca/real good player no doubt but world class???
The current Irish team do not have world class players.
@Liam Neeson: but people still such high expectations.
@Liam Neeson: they do have a particular set of skills that make them a nightmare for teams like Denmark though!!
Can we blame the government?
@Alanjturing: Ah sure why not.
Lol. Coleman world class . Made me laugh
No offence to Sรฉamus Coleman but Eriksen is a bigger loss to Denmark than Coleman is to Ireland.
@James Clancy: I disagree. Coleman is more of a loss to Ireland than Erikson is to Denmark. Coleman is the captain and gives stability and is world class in his position which gives the rest of the team confidence. He remains our only truly world class player whereas Denmark have a lot of exceptional players in every department. Itโs not that I donโt rate Erikson because I really do itโs just that Denmarkโs odds of winning decrease 10% without him while our odds of getting something out of the game decrease more rapidly without Coleman. Thus: Coleman the bigger loss.
@John Mullin: I think Eriksen will be missed more. His ability from set pieces and he can change a game in seconds. Its irreplaceable. Colemans leadership will be missed but Doherty is playing as good as Coleman can play at moment
I can guarantee you with almost 100% certainty. That Denmark wonโt give a toss, who is or isnโt available for us on Saturday.
Heโs already making excuses, Jesus how did we end up with him and Keane, or even worse John Delaney
@Jonny: Well one word explains how we ended up with John Delaney: nepotism.
โThey always cheat, they always lie, f*ck Delaney and the FAI.โ
Quite right Martin. We are missing world class players too. Nothing to do with injury or availability, unfortunately we just donโt have any
Ah yeah we had the Danes on the ropes that night. Good man Martin!
@Toon Army: yes I mean the Danish equaliser was completely against the run of play wasnโt it. Seriously will he even look over that game again before deciding what team to put out.
Im sure Denmark see it the same way
