Silver and bronze for Ireland at Para-cycling World Championships

There was joy for Mark Rohan and Colin Lynch in Canada today.

IRELAND’S MARK ROHAN has won silver in the time trial of the UCI Para-cycling World Championships in Baie-Comeau, Canada.

The Westmeath cyclist, who claimed two gold medals at last summer’s Paralympics, recorded a personal best time of 35:55.49 in the H1 Handcycling category to finish behind winner Luca Mazzone of Italy.

“Everything went to plan,” Rohan said afterwards. “I came out a week early this year, and that really paid off. I rode according to the plan, even above it, as I got a PB out there. I’m happy with the performance, and very proud to have an Irish jersey on the podium.

“I was 20 seconds down coming into the last section, and I just kept the hammer down until the end. Results are out of your control, all you can do is focus on your own performance.

“Especially in the Time Trial, hopefully my experience and tactics can come more into play in the Road Race on Saturday,” he added. “I’d just like to say a huge thanks to Brian, Neill and the whole team who helped out.”

Meanwhile, his compatriot Colin Lynch also picked up a medal when he won a bronze in the Men’s C2 Time Trial.

Speaking after the race, Lynch said:

“I’m really happy with my performance. A lot of months of planning and hard work came to fruition. After the Paralympic Games last year, it was a huge success to beat most of the guys who beat me there, and to re-establish myself on the podium.

“The sport is moving on so much each year, it is getting harder all the time. It is a sign of my progress to be able to get back on the podium this year. I’m very pleased to be here, and want to thank Brian, Gerry, Neill and Stacey, this was a real team effort.”
