Mark Lawrenson to have 'reduced role' on Match of the Day this season

The BBC admit the former Ireland international won’t be on our screens as much this year.

FOOTBALL FANS ARE going to see a little less of Mark Lawrenson this season.

The former Liverpool and Ireland defender will have a ‘reduced role’ on the BBC’s flagship Match of the Day programme, station chiefs confirmed.

Lawrenson is a regular on Today FM’s The Last Word programme and TV3′s football coverage here.

Lawro’s long-time colleague with the Reds and on the MOTD couch, Alan Hansen, enters his final season on the channel. He will retire after next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

Former Brighton manager Gus Poyet — who was told of his sacking while working on the coverage of the Confederations Cup — returns.

While the likes of Les Ferdinand and Robbie Savage make up the rest of the panelists. Mark Chapman replaces Northern Ireland native, Colin Murray, as the face of MOTD2.
