On this day three years ago, Mario Balotelli ripped Manchester United to shreds

The striker, currently under intense scrutiny at Liverpool, does occasionally pop up with impressive performances.

LESS THAN 48 HOURS before a Manchester derby in 2011, police and fire-fighters pulled up outside Mario Balotelli’s house in Cheshire because a firework had been set off inside. Hardly the most ideal preparation for an intense Premier League battle but it didn’t seem to do the Italian much harm.

At Old Trafford, City were superb and ran riot. The Italian was a constant menace and scored twice as did Edin Dzeko while Sergio Aguero and David Silva also got their names on the score-sheet to ensure a 6-1 win.

It was United’s worst home defeat since 1955.

After scoring his first goal, Balotelli lifted up his jersey to reveal a now-infamous message underneath. It said: ‘Why Always Me?’

Given his current predicament at Liverpool and the level of media scrutiny he’s under, the 24 year-old might be asking himself the same question once again. But, as he proved against United three years ago to the day, he’s at his most dangerous when written off.
