Marco Reus fined €540,000 for driving without a licence

Even on a footballer’s salary, that stings.

MARCO REUS HAS been hit with a fine of more than €500,000 for repeatedly driving without a licence for three years according to reports in German newspaper Bild.

It seems the Borussia Dortmund winger managed to evade authorities, despite being stopped by police several times since 2011 – including receiving five speeding tickets – with the German authorities only now realising he should not be on the road.

Reus was fined ”90 Tagessätze” a complicated system of sliding fines used in some European countries. With the daily rate for each person determined by their income and family situation and with Reus being single, childless and – we assume – very, very wealthy, his daily rate is quite high.

The German magazine Focus has an explanation from Reus with the German international saying he took driving lessons at 18, but never got around to taking the driving test.

With no sign of anyone looking for a licence, Reus just carried on driving:

“I then unfortunately decided to go that route. I can not comprehend the reasons even today.”

Given that Reus earns a reported €65,000 a week, he’ll have the fine paid off in less than three months but €540,000 is still a huge amount of money.
