GOALS FROM DANNY WELBECK, Ashley Young and Adnan Januzaj gave Manchester United a 3-1 victory over West Ham at Old Trafford.
David Moyes’ side, on the back of a three-game winning run coming into the Premier League clash, have developed a mean defensive backbone of late. Their 395 minute run without conceding a goal came to an end with nine minutes of play remaining as Carlton Cole netted a consolation.
The United back four enjoyed a relaxed first half as the Hammers have struggled to piece any moves of note together. Tom Cleverley was the first to draw a save from debutant West Ham goalkeeper Adrian.
Antonio Valencia suffered the same fate but the home fans sensed a breakthrough, which duly arrived on 26 minutes. Wayne Rooney slipped in strike partner Danny Welbeck, who held off James Collins and dispatched a low drive. It was Welbeck’s first league goal at home for 14 months.
Januzaj was bundled over by Mark Noble in the box but his penalty claims were waved off. The Hammers were happy to see Januzaj flashed with a yellow card for a dive when in the vicinity of Collins. On 36 minutes the Belgian linked up with Welbeck, jinked around Collins and slotted the ball home.
Collins was involved in United’s third goal too as he failed to close down Ashley Young in time. with 72 minutes on the clock, Rooney found the former Aston Villa winger and he unleashed an unstoppable drive to make it 3-0.
Cole took advantage of a sloppy piece of defending by Alex Buttner to chalk a goal off the deficit but United comfortably closed out the match to climb up to seventh in the league.
