VIDEO: Manchester United's resistance lasts 43 seconds against City

That sense of optimism faded fast at Old Trafford.

MANCHESTER UNITED WERE soundly beaten 3-0 by cross-town rivals Manchester City in their Premier League encounter at Old Trafford.

David Moyes’ men had been buoyed by victories over Olympiakos and West Ham coming into this evening’s tie but found their defence breached after just 43 seconds. Having blocked a David Silva shot, Rafael was then beaten by Samir Nasri inside the United box. The Frenchman struck the post but City striker Edin Dzeko was on hand to tap in the rebound.

Dzeko added a second soon after the break to dash any United hopes of a comeback. In the final minutes, Yaya Touré made it 3-0 after slotting home past David de Gea.
