FA to investigate Mourinho's referee comments ahead of Liverpool showdown

The United manager feels the pressure may be too much for the Manchester-based official.

MANCHESTER UNITED MANAGER Jose Mourinho could face disciplinary action from the Football Association after speaking about the appointment of referee Anthony Taylor for the Monday night clash against Liverpool.

Under FA rules, managers and players are not permitted to comment about the referee before any fixture, as it could be interpreted as influencing the officials.

The decision to appoint Taylor who is based in Manchester and supports non-league Altrincham, was last week criticised by some, including the former head of the Professional Game Match Officials Keith Hackett.

“No-one is questioning his integrity,” Hackett said. “But what if something goes wrong? It would be intolerable.”

And when Mourinho was asked about Taylor’s appointment, he too felt the scrutiny the referee may face could be unfair.

“I think Mr Taylor is a very good referee but because such pressure is being put on him I think it will be difficult for him to have a very good performance at Anfield,” the United manager said.

“I don’t really want to say too much more on the matter. I have my view but I have learned a lesson, if you want to call it that, by being punished so many times for my words about referees.”

The FA have confirmed they will examine the context of Mourinho’s comments before deciding if they will take further action against the 53-year-old Portuguese.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp refused to comment when quizzed about Taylor during his press conference on Friday.
