MANCHESTER UNITED paid £77 million (€88 million) more for Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro this summer than they were actually worth, according to a new study.
The Red Devils were found to have the highest overspend of any club in Europe’s ‘big five’ leagues when reported transfer fees were compared to a player’s estimated value prior to transfer.
The study by Swiss-based CIES Football Observatory, published on Monday, showed United had paid a combined €238 million (£209m) more than the estimated total value of 33 players they had signed since July 2012.
A further breakdown of the data obtained by the PA news agency on Tuesday showed the signing of Antony from Ajax was the biggest contributor to United’s overspend.
He was valued at €67 million but United were reported to have paid €100m – a difference of €33m.
United were found to have overspent by €29m to sign Martinez and €26m to sign Casemiro. Across the three deals that amounts to €88m or just over £77m.
The signing of Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid in 2014 was listed as a €27m overspend, while United were found to have overpaid to the tune of €25m and €21m to bring in Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace and Harry Maguire from Leicester in the summer 2019 window.
The signing of Paul Pogba from Juventus in 2016 was found to be United’s best bit of business in terms of estimated value compared to transfer fee paid.
United paid a reported €110m for the France midfielder but his estimated value prior to the deal was €138m, according to the CIES Football Observatory.
The signing of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund was found to have cost United €15m less than his estimated value.

Incredibly Pogba was the best value. His value was based on what MU earned by having him, this was a success. It’s Hard for MU fans to take given he produced only a handful of quality 45 minute periods in 5 years.
@6CL: I think what annoyed United fans about him was that the World Cup 2018, and the 2017 and 2019 seasons that he could perform at a world class level. But for about 60-70% of the time looked disinterested.
@Cathal Carr: Kinda agree, a WC can overrate players. Its only 7 games to final, its summer, slower than PL and Pogba had 10 other world class players around him (Pogba is good if positional and tactical responsibility lies with others). I believe the WC overrated him. Recently in Euros he’s not been so lucky, he cost France last year.
I don’t thank anyone would be surprised at that, especially the recent summer transfers. Most selling clubs saw the opportunity to take advantage of their desperation. A once big team out of the champions league, trying to get big players that want exactly that. The problem is it’s the club that gets hit in the pocket and not the Glazers.
