Man United signing of Eric Bailly named the Premier League's most overpriced transfer

CIES Football Observatory has used an algorithm to assess the highest gaps between fee paid and the estimated real worth of a player.

MAN UNITED’S €38.4 million (£32.1m) capture of Eric Bailly was the most overpriced transfer during the Premier League window, according to a study.

CIES Football Observatory has used an algorithm to assess the highest gaps between fee paid, including add-ons, and the estimated real worth of a player and Jose Mourinho’s first signing as United manager tops the Premier League list.

United have been determined to have overspent by €23.5m (£19.6m), bettered only by Juventus spending €23.8m (£19.9m) too much on Gonzalo Higuain, who joined from Napoli for €90m.

The Premier League dominate the top 20, with only eight deals not involving an English team. Manchester City appear twice of the list having apparently overspent by €20.3m (£17m) on John Stones and €14.5m (£12.5m) on Leroy Sane, with United shelling out €15.2m (£12.7m) too much when landing Paul Pogba for a world-record fee.

Chelsea make the top 20 on three occasions after signing David Luiz, Marcos Alonso and Michy Batshuayi for a combined overspend of €47m (£39.3m).

Arsenal are deemed to have parted with €21.2m (£17.7m) too much on Granit Xhaka’s arrival from Borussia Monchengladbach, while Sunderland should have spent just €6.7m (£5.6m) on Dider Ndong, not the €16m (£13.4m) they reportedly did, according to the data.
