Man United buy medals of Irish legend Dunne

Memorabilia previously owned by the ex-player had been put up for auction.

THE MEDALS OF legendary Irish footballer Tony Dunne have been bought at an auction by Man United – the club he played for between 1960 and 1973.

The medals, in addition to further memorabilia originally belonging to the player, were sold at a price of £44,000.

Dunne was bought as part of the manager Matt Busby’s recruiting process, after the 1958 Munich air disaster had left his side depleted.

The Irish player then went on to win two league medals, along with an FA Cup and European Cup medal with the club.

The 70-year-old, who also played for Shelbourne and Bolton, won 33 caps for Ireland and was given the Irish Footballer of the Year award in 1969.
