There were some standout performances across the board, with Galway’s Shane Walsh and Dublin’s Niall Scully scooping The Sunday Game’s man-of-the-match awards.

The Tribesmen recorded a first championship win in 53 years over Kerry at HQ yesterday. And on the RTÉ programme last night, the panel recognised the exploits of Kerry teenage sensation David Clifford — who hit 1-5 from play– and Galway defender Garreth Bradshaw, but it was Walsh they felt who shone brightest on the day.

The Kilkerrin-Clonberne ace’s star continues to rise as he put on a fine display of free-taking and chipped in with a super point from play, finishing with 0-5.

Walsh also played a pivotal part in Patrick Sweeney’s late goal, creating the move.

In the first match of that double-header yesterday, Monaghan overcame Kildare on a scoreline of 0-15 to 1-10.

That game was shown on Sky Sports so there was no individual accolade handed out on The Sunday Game highlights show, but Karl O’Connell was named man-of-the-match by Sky and presented with his award on air afterwards.

The Tyholland man was excellent and clipped over 0-3 from play.

On Saturday night, Jim Gavin’s Dublin saw off Donegal and it was Niall Scully who was awarded The Sunday Game man-of-the-match title. The Templeogue Synge Street star’s two goals were vital.

And in the opening Super 8s fixture of the weekend, Tyrone got off to a flying start with an 18-point win over Roscommon and Niall Sludden took the man-of-the-match award.

The Dromore forward finished with 1-2 as Mickey Harte’s side put up a huge score of 4-24 against the Connacht finalists.
