MANCHESTER CITY STAGED a thrilling fightback from two goals down to keep the destiny of the Premier League title in their hands, but Riyad Mahrezโs late penalty miss forced the leaders to settle for a dramatic 2-2 draw at West Ham on Sunday.
Pep Guardiolaโs side were in danger of gifting second placed Liverpool a title lifeline after West Hamโs Jarrod Bowen struck twice in the first half.
But Cityโs stirring recovery showed the character that has already brought them three titles in the last four seasons.
Jack Grealish got one back soon after the interval and Vladimir Coufalโs own goal completed Cityโs escape act.
It should have been even better for City, but Mahrezโs penalty was saved by Lukasz Fabianski with five minutes left.
While that was a bitter blow to Guardiola, who stood ashen-faced on the touchline, in the circumstances City will be relieved to have moved four points clear of Liverpool with a goal difference seven better than their rivals.
They will retain the title if Jurgen Kloppโs side lose their game in hand at Southampton on Tuesday.
If Liverpool beat Southampton to close the gap to one point, Guardiolaโs men can still clinch the trophy with a victory against Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium on May 22.
A title race for the ages could well go down to the last day of the season, when Liverpool host Wolves, as it did when City pipped the Reds to first place in 2019.
Guardiola said this week he wants players with a โspecial mentalityโ as he looks to bolster his squad for next season, personalities who, like him, wake up every day obsessed with winning.
Cityโs enthralling revival to extend their unbeaten league run to 11 matches showed Guardiola already has plenty of fighters in his squad, although he might not put Mahrez on penalty duties again for a while.
Aymeric Laporte and Fernandinho were passed fit in start in Cityโs defence after suffering injuries in Wednesdayโs win at Wolves.
But City were already without injured defenders Ruben Dias, John Stones and Kyle Walker and they didnโt look comfortable at the back from the opening moments.
Craig Dawson got behind Oleksandr Zinchenko to meet Pablo Fornalsโ cross, but with the goal at his mercy, the West Ham defender headed over.
That early threat seemed to fluster City, who controlled possession but found it difficult to create clear chances with West Ham happy to defend deep and strike on the counter.
Just as City looked set to turn the screw, they were hit with a sucker punch in the 24th minute.
Fornalsโ opportunistic pass caught Laporte and Zinchenko trying to play offside and Bowen nipped in behind, rounding Ederson before slotting home from a tight angle.
Although West Ham had nothing to play for, they had already beaten Liverpool and Chelsea at home and this was no easy ride for City as David Moyesโ game-plan exposed the flaws in the leadersโ commitment to all-out attack.
Cityโs soft centre was exposed again on the stroke of half-time.
Fabianskiโs long kick was headed on and Michail Antonio clipped his pass beyond Zinchenko, freeing Bowen to sprint clear and shoot low past Ederson.
Desperately needing a quick response after the break, Grealish gave City a lifeline in the 49th minute.
Rodriโs flick reached Grealish and his shot bounced into the ground, going through Dawsonโs legs and past the wrong-footed Fabianski.
That was the signal for City to lay siege to the West Ham goal.
Fabianski saved Jesusโs drive with his legs, then kept out Bernardo Silvaโs volley.
Cityโs relentless pressure was rewarded in the 69th minute when Mahrezโs free-kick was headed into his own net by the diving Coufal.
The drama wasnโt over and City were awarded an 85th minute penalty after a VAR review of Dawsonโs trip on Jesus.
Mahrez stepped up with a chance to almost seal the title, but Fabianski dived to his left to make a save that kept the title race on a knife edge.
Iโm a United fan, but leaving aside the rivalry nonsense, it would be a great footballing story if Gerrard managed to win the league for Liverpool.
@Stiofรกn รโMurchรบ: sorry but as a united fan i hate to see liverpool win a coin toss. And Iโd fully expect any self respecting pool fan to feel the same about united. Rivarly in football is a great thing.
@Brian Dunne: klopp has galvanised Manchester at least ;-)
@Vinny Clare: its probably more complex for actual mancs! Over here Iโve grown up with pool fans giving me stick about 26 yrs etc. Then thi tide turned and it was us giving the stick. Now its turned again! In all that time i probably met around 10 city fans in total in ireland! In sure red half of manchester wont relish city winning the league.
@Brian Dunne: I shouldnโt have called rivalry nonsense, as it does create the banter around it alright, but I can also see football objectively, so yes, I think it would be an excellent footballing story in terms of Gerrardโs redemptive arc, as stories go. Does it mean I want it to happen? No, Iโd rather roll in a field of nettles than have to listen to Liverpool fans if it happens.
@Brian Dunne: Precisely. There is never a reason to be cheering on City or Liverpool. Those โWeโre all City today arenโt we?โ comments are shameful. City drawing kept Man United out of the Europa Conference League position, all I cared about.
@Oliver Walker: a friend of mine is die hard Utd referred to it as choosing between herpes and syphillis :-)
@Vinny Clare: Worse than that. Not afraid to say Klopp has done a very good job but thatโs as far as it goes. Canโt cheer any of them on for any reason. If one of them needed to beat the other to stop Man United from relegation, you would have to accept whatever result came along.
Would it still not be in their own hands if they lost ,they would of just had to match Liverpool score in last game
@Liam Collins: yes but 2-0 down felt advantage Pool even if just for momentum
@Aidan Ryan: As a Liverpool fan, itโs definitely wouldnโt have been advantage Liverpool if they lost 1/2 nil in this game.
Their superior goal difference is unfortunately worth a extra point so going into last game having to probably Outscore City by likely 3/4 goals would have horrible. Couldnt stomach losing a 90 point league season on GD
In truth, with Cityโs much better goal difference, they always needed to drop points in both games for Liverpool to have any chance, so this was enough for Liverpool today, given that they already needed Villa to take points of City too anyway.
If Liverpool can get a win v Southampton, it at least means City have to win again V Villa to be sure.
Could be interesting yet!
@seancreaven13: All Liverpool can do is win their 2 games which I think they will against Southampton and Wolves and see if its enough.
Its all set up for Stevie G and Coutinho to win the league for Liverpool!
@James Quinn: Precisely my point.. so a City loss today wouldโve made no difference to a draw.
Canโt beat pox, hard to see us winning it now but Iโd take the treble and a good contest in the league if you offered it last summer after scraping 4th.
@Scott Crossfield: โThe Trebleโ is the league, FA Cup and CL. Its been done only once. Without the league itโs A Treble
@Scott Crossfield: some fan you are, Liverpool finished third last season
@Ray Taff:
@Ray Taff: explain?
@Scott Crossfield: biggest kettle calling the pot back there
@Ray Taff: Having already secured the double this sesson , if klopp wins the CL it would be amazing treble so skew it however you want but 3 trophies is a treble.
Alot of opposition are really shook at this stage now liverpool have won another trophy
@Vinny Clare: Exactly what he saidโฆ The Treble doesnโt include the League Cup. Itโs the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. Only Manchester United have done that. A treble is the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup. If Liverpool win the Quadruple then obviously that will eclipse what Manchester did in 99. Perish the thought.
@Oliver Walker: itโs not rugby ( grand slam, triple crown) a treble is a treble regardless of trophyโs. For example Liverpool beat Madrid and city win the league will knowbody be allowed to refer to it as the season Liverpool won a treble?
@Vinny Clare: Won A treble yes, not THE treble. Iโm not being pedantic but they are the 3 trophies you need to win.
@Oliver Walker: itโs the little things the United fans have to hold onto now eh. Difference between โtheโ and โaโ Haha
If villa can keep city scoreless for the first half hour next week you never know, the nerves could start to show.
What character city showed todayโฆ.in an awful hole and showed their class to battle out of itโฆin their own hands
@Aidan Ryan: they missed a peno to win the game.
Iโve been a City supporter for over 40 years and nearly always make it hard on ourselves to win anything. Hope Haaland can take penalities!. Iโm sure we will go behind against Villa also.
@Michael Dowling: you had a tough time for a lot of those years
@Michael Dowling: It was very hard for yis to win anything before the oil money
@Simon Hughes: true just like any team before money is invested. Actually like any organization truth be told.
In Stevie G we trust!
Ahhhh jammiest *****, but showed good heart to come back. If they play like that against Gerrardโs Villa who knows what will happen.
@Liam: Itโs Aston Villa
@johnny onion eye: Yesโฆ full marks for you
David Moyes you footballing genius COYI
Villa away to city ordinarily itโs a cricket score and still might be, but Liverpool are at this moment still in it. Regardless of how slim. Still have to do the business against the saints.
I hope Steven Gerrard does not slip. up again
@George Demo: Jesus thatโs genius did it take u long to think of that one
City love giving their fans a fright. I remember going by boat to see them play West Brom in the 1970 league cup final. They went behind after 5 minutes but eventually won in extra time Liverpool and utd had all the money then so things have evened up somewhat now
A state sponsored sportswashed financially doped front- city should be going to the world cup in Qutar with their mates in PSG and Newcastle not playing club sides!
@Mr Kenobi: come on city
