Reigning MLS champions Portland Timbers were involved in 2 of the best moments of the weekend

Federico Higuain conjured an early contender for Goal of the Season.

VERY MUCH THE hipsters’ choice, Portland Timbers have enjoyed a seriously impressive run in Major League Soccer in recent years.

Having only started out as a MLS franchise in 2011, the team was crowned champions just a few months ago.

They began their title defence on Sunday in a repeat of last year’s MLS Cup decider against Columbus Crew.

And, with their home support widely regarded as being among the best in the league, the Timbers didn’t disappoint with their pre-game ritual.

As good as the tifo was, the on-field action proved even more entertaining as the hosts managed a 2-1 victory over the Crew. But the visitors did manage to score an early contender for Goal of the Season as Federico Higuain – brother of Napoli and former Real Madrid striker Gonzalo – conjured a moment his sibling would be proud of.
