LUIS GARCIA, THE player who struck the crucial goal for Liverpool in the 2005 Champions League semi-final against Chelsea, has announced his retirement from football today.
The Spaniard made the announcement on his official website. Garcia’s career saw him play for Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, as well as winning 18 caps with Spain.
But it was his stint with Liverpool between 2004 and 2007 that was most successful as he was part of the Champions League winning side in 2005.
Garcia played in the extraordinary final win over AC Milan on penalties in Istanbul but he is best remembered for his controversial goal in the second leg of their semi-final against Chelsea.
After the teams had drawn 0-0 in the first leg at Stamford Bridge, Liverpool won the second leg 1-0 at Anfield.
