RORY MCILROY AND and girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki could become even more filthy rich if they play their cards right as the sporting world’s ‘golden couple’.
Liam Kelly, in yesterday’s Irish Independent, estimates that (as a pair) their endorsement deals could be bolstered by 50%.
Coming on top of the combined total €26million earned separately last year by the top women’s tennis player and the future (fingers crossed) top dog in golf, that would represent a serious chunk of change.
That’s what the marketing experts reckon anyway. But how have previous sporting couples faired out?
Matt Emmons of USA and Katerina Kurkova of the Czech Republic have a great sporting love story. Matt was in the final of the 3P competition in Athens 2004. He looked like he would surely take his second Olympic gold at the games (having already won the gold in the 50m prone event with a borrowed rifle after someone had sabotaged his own with a screwdriver) when he cross fired on his last shot taking him from 1st place to 8th in an instant. Later that day when Matt was hanging out in a beer garden with his team mates in the Olympic village, Katerina (who had taken bronze in 10m air rifle) went up to him to introduce herself and offer her condolences on the final. They were married in 2007.
