'Project player' Ludik agrees new deal that will keep him at Ulster until 2020

The versatile back will be eligible for the Irish national team next summer.

VERSATILE ULSTER BACK Louis Ludik has agreed a new deal that will see him contracted to the province until 2020.

The South African native, who has played at outside centre, fullback and wing for Ulster, will be eligible for the Irish national team next summer.

Ludik, who turned 30 on Saturday, signed a one-year contract extension earlier this year, despite the arrival of Kiwi fullback Charles Piutau, after the IRFU agreed to deem him a ‘project player’ for the national team.

Awarded the Ulster Player of the Month award for September, Ludik started this season in impressive form, although he is currently sidelined with a fractured cheekbone which was sustained against Connacht 12 days ago.

“I’m thrilled to be extending my stay at Ulster,” Ludik, who joined the province from French side Agen in 2014, said in a statement.

“Myself and my family really enjoy Belfast and we feel very much at home here.

“There is a brilliant vibe amongst the squad and everyone is working hard to try to achieve success this season. Once I return to fitness, I’m looking forward to contributing to the team this season and for the following three years.”

Les Kiss, Ulster’s director of rugby, welcomed the news.

“Keeping Louis on our roster is a major boost for us.

“He is an outstanding guy who gives 100% to the cause and adds so much value both on and off the pitch.

“He is a great influence on the squad and he also does some great work in the local community.

“His form at the start of this season has been absolutely brilliant and I’m looking forward to seeing him deliver for us over the next few years.”
