Advantage Cobh in First Division promotion play-offs; Athlone v Waterford finely poised

Ronan Coughlan and Frantz Pierrot were both on the scoresheet as it finished 1-1 between Athlone and Waterford.

COBH RAMBLERS WILL take a narrow advantage back to St Colman’s Park after they beat Wexford 1-0 in the first leg of their SSE Airtricity League First Division promotion play-off semi final.

Pierce Phillips was credited with the final touch for the game’s only goal after Mikie Rowe’s inswinging corner on 14 minutes caused havoc in the Wexford area and ended up in Charlie Heffernan’s net.

Meanwhile, it finished honours even in the midlands as Frantz Pierrot’s equaliser 12 minutes from time earned Athlone Town a 1-1 draw against Waterford.

Blues star man Ronan Coughlan gave the visitors the lead on 52 minutes with a sharp turn and powerful finish for his 33th league goal of the season.

But the prolific Pierrot levelled matters late on as he took his own tally to 20 goals for the season and left matters finely poised ahead of the return at the RSC.

Both semi-final second legs take place this Saturday, with Waterford hosting Athlone at 3pm before Cobh meet Wexford at 5pm.
