Liverpool to assess fitness of Steven Gerrard next week

Steven Gerrard missed Liverpool’s win over West Brom with an ankle infection and his fitness will be assessed by the club next week.

LIVERPOOL BOSS KENNY Dalglish says that the fitness of captain Steven Gerrard will be assessed next week after he missed the 2-0 win over West Brom on Saturday evening.

The 31-year-old has only recently returned from a groin injury that kept him out of the game for six months – his longest ever absence – and succumbed to an ankle infection this weekend.

While Dalglish says the two injuries are not related, he does not know whether or not Gerrard will be fit to face Spain and Sweden in England’s upcoming friendly internationals.

“Steven was in our minds for the game. It just flared up,” the Scot told the BBC. “Will he be fit for England? I haven’t got a clue. It’s nothing to do with any injuries before – it’s an infection.”

Liverpool’s next game actually takes place before the England games, against Swansea at Anfield next Saturday, leaving Reds in a sweat over the fitness of both Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. The defender also missed the Baggies match with a calf strain.
